WildAsia’s Chuah Ee Chia says:
“Tourists come to Siem Reap to visit 12th-century Cambodia, but what about modern-day Cambodia?” ChheaYut Chhon, or Yut, our tour guide from PEPY, asked us while we were on the way to Angkor Wat in the tuk-tuk, a three-wheeler motortaxi which is a popular form of transportation in Cambodia.
Modern-day Cambodia? What is modern-day Cambodia?
Is it a place where street children peddle tourists to buy postcards and crafts?
Or is it the downtown streets of Siem Reap, lined with bars, massage parlours, night markets, travelling agencies, foreign restaurants, local food stalls and hundreds of tuk-tuk parked side by side, competing for customers?Or is it the cultural village situated along the road between Siem Reap airport and the town centre, parading the Khmer culture and traditions that tourists often flock to?
