Launching in February 2011, TEDxPhnomPenh is a TEDx event that will combined live speakers with TED video screenings and discussions over the course of a day. The first event featured a Cambodian blogger, an English entrepreneur and a Japanese live artist, amongst many others. The second event is scheduled for late 2011, and promises to bring the same array of innovative and engaging speakers to Phnom Penh in the name of ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. On April 20th, TEDxPhnomPenh will come to Meta House to launch a ‘TEDTalks’ series leading up to the next event. The videos will be followed by a Q&A with Kounila Keo.

LANDMINES, AMPUTEES AND EMPOWERMENT IN CAMBODIA

7PM: It’s hard to get firm numbers on the percentage of Cambodia’s population which is living with disabilities. Part of the problem stems from the stigma which surrounds disability in Cambodia. In the framework of our ScreenDocs series we invite you to a SNEAK PREVIEW AND CAMBODIAN PREMIERE SCREENING of a BRANDNEW INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY focusing on empowerment of disabled women in Cambodia. We can’t tell you its title, so be surprised! This presentation is accompanied by two films, which have been produced by Meta House: RISE UP! (2009, 30 mins) follows vocational training in Battambang; MY VOICE (2010, 20 mins) encourages people living with disabilities to vote.

“SOUTH OF THE BORDER” IN LATIN AMERICA

7PM: Two controversial films examine the free-market economic policies pushed by the U.S. and the International Monetary Fund, and how they have largely failed to alleviate Latin America’s chronic income inequality. WAR ON DEMOCRACY (2007, 96 mins) by award-winning journalist John Pilger investigates America’s manipulation of Latin American politics during the last 50 years leading up to the struggle by ordinary people to free themselves from poverty and racism. Oliver Stone’s SOUTH OF THE BORDER (2009, 78 mins) is a “political road movie”. The renowned Hollywood director travels from the Caribbean down the spine of the Andes to interview eight South-American presidents.

“KAMPUCHEA: DEATH & REBIRTH”

6.30PM: LOOKING BACK, LOOKING AHEAD (PT. 2) consists of another 10 mini-doc films on Khmer Rouge history and reconciliation. Students from the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) visit a market vendor, who remembers her family members that were killed under Pol Pot. A teacher recalls how he taught people to follow KR orders. Khmer students learn about the Holocaust during a trip to Germany. 8PM: KAMPUCHEA: DEATH AND REBIRTH (1979, 90min) is the first documentary film after the genocide. The scenes filmed during spring 1979 are part of history: Phnom Penh left to rampant nature and heaps of skulls…

“THE PROMISE OF MUSIC”:
A TRIP FROM VENEZUELA TO GERMANY
8PM: This TV documentary (2008, 93 mins) on Venezuela’s visionary music-education system introduces the audience to the “Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela” and its charismatic conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Spanish-German Director Enrique Sánchez Lansch accompanies him and four young musicians from rehearsals in Caracas to their performance at the Beethoven festival in Bonn. Meet these young musicians, watch their daily lives, hear their stories, and watch them perform and discover that their commitment to the Youth Orchestra is an essential part of their life. Filmmaker will be present at the screening (Q&A) by invitation of the Goethe-Institut.
