On TUESDAY, 7/06, 7PM we screen Elspeth Waldie’s inspiring documentary “ENCOURAGE AND I CAN” (2010, 32 mins, Khmer with English subs), which is set against the stunning backdrop of rural Cambodia. It tells the story of Meas Chakriya – a young and determined wheel-chair user who longs for a fulfilling life. Her dreams start to become reality when she meets two talented dancers.
Chakriya and two members of the Kampot-based organization EPIC ARTS will present the film along with cameraman Mark Jones (Purple Field Productions).
Their talk is followed by a sneak preview of a NEW INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY (2010, 90 mins, Khmer/English with English subs) focusing on the empowerment of female mine victims in Cambodia.

“BANG BENG”: CAMBODIAN EDUTAINMENT FILM PREMIERE
7PM: Understanding the current tension of Cambodian growers with their understanding of traditional versus modern science-based agriculture, the highly entertaining Cambodian drama, “BANG BENG, THE INTELLIGENT FARMER” (2011, 49 mins) is directed by Chum Reap and features a fresh cast of Cambodian actors. Through BANG BENG’s comical competition with a fellow suitor for a farmer’s lovely daughter’s hand in marriage, Cambodians can better understand how rice productivity improves the lives of growers. The Department of Agriculture Extension (MAFF), CAVAC, AusAID and Meta House invite you to the premiere screening. Crew and cast will be in attendance.

TWO EVENTS: CHILD LABOUR IN CAMBODIA AND “ART OF IMPROVISATION”
6PM (Rooftop): ILO’s International Program for the Elimination of Child Labour stages a unique event where former child labourers, now removed from work and in school will give attendees a unique account of their time as working children. Participants will have the rare opportunity to hear the testimonies of child labourers The event will also showcase a small photo exhibition. 6.30PM (Gallery): Art Plus Foundation presents THE ART OF IMPROVISATION. The screening of a documentary about US pianist and composer Keith Jarrett (84 mins) is followed by a PIANO RECITAL. Gabriele da Vinci play’s works by Keith Jarrett. NEW THAI CINEMA’S LATEST BLOCKBUSTER: “UNCLE BOONMEE”
7PM: Director hypnotic drama UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES (2010, 113 mins, Thai, English subs) tells the haunting story of a Thai man suffering from kidney failure who retreats to the countryside to die in the company of his loved ones. As Uncle Boonmee nears the end of his life, the spirit of his late wife returns to guide him into the unknown, and his estranged son reappears in the form of a jungle spirit. The Cannes-Film-Festival-winner 2010, set in Isan province, is playfully invoking both the lifestyle and the animistic beliefs of the Northeastern country folk, and the primitive magic of early Thai cinema.

“FACING GENOCIDE”: DOC FILM ABOUT KR LEADER KHIEU SAMPHAN
7PM: A prominent member of the circle of leftist Khmer intellectuals studying in Paris in the 1950s, Khieu Samphan became one of the closest collaborators of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge “Head of State”. Swedish filmmakers David Aronowitsch and Staffan Lindberg have followed him two years before his arrest in 2007. In the next months he will be tried for “Crimes Against Humanity, War Crimes and Genocide” at the ECCC. This new documentary FACING GENOCIDE (94 mins, 2010, English/English subs) is only screened at Meta House. It also features interviews with Cambodian lawyer and genocide victim Theary Seng, Jacques Vergès, Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan’s wife.

MAO ZEDONG VS. CHIANG KAI-SHEK: “THE FOUNDING OF A REPUBLIC”
7PM: The release of Han Sanping and Huang Jianxin’s feature film THE FOUNDING OF A REPUBLIC (2009, 138 mins) coincided with the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party winning the Civil War in 1949. It is the cinematic equivalent of an awards ceremony, turning an exposition-filled propaganda film into a celebratory party filled with a who’s who of Chinese cinema (including directors & international stars such as Jackie Chan and Jet Li). It helps us remember one of the most contentious and pivotal moments of modern Chinese history.
