Austrian writer-director Michael Haneke once cited Roberto Rossellini’s “Germany Year Zero” (1948), shot in postwar Berlin, as a key influence on his cinematic thinking.
The devastating story of a young boy’s corruption in the midst of literal and spiritual rubble posed a question: How did it come to this?
Haneke’s latest film and Palm d’Or-winning period drama (2009, 145mins) tries to answer that question by way of historical prologue. Phnom Penh Hot Strings Blues Club will share a stage with blues harmonicist and singer Doc Span for one night only. In the true spirit of the Blues, the multi-talented Phnom Penh Hot Strings will foray into Doc’s blues-influenced world for an evening of jamming, sharing and improvising.
Doc Span is renowned for his unique smokey voice, expressive tone, soulful dynamics and exciting stage presence. His style is drawn from a personal pilgrimage through the blues with years of jamming with many of Chicago Blues greats while a paramedic at the notorious Cook County Jail. Doc is currently a well known and one of the best and harmonists in Australia and his meeting with the Phnom Penh Hot Strings promises to be an exciting and unpredictable exchange of style and ideas…

Warapo is the house band at the famous Caraville Hotel in Saigon. Founded in 1998 in Santa Clara, Cuba, the four-man, two-woman Cuban fusion band play radio-friendly Latin rhythms steeped in the Cuban tradition. Warapo won the title “Best Amateur Band” in November 1998 at the 14th Artist College Festival in Holguín, and with their second album, “Tengo Nada,” the band garnered four nominations at the 2008 Cuban Disco Awards, Cuba’s most prestigious music awards.
