Social Media has become increasingly important in present day and age. Its benefits in connecting people across and beyond boundaries are indisputable. It has also played a pivotal role that translates into social changes in recent days in some countries across the world. Despite such values, this tool is not available to everybody; some countries have blocked access to this vital tool.

As a genuine member of the 21st century global community, CAMBODIA IS NOT ONE OF THOSE
COUNTRIES AND WE WANT TO CELEBRATE THAT FACT. This is what this event
is all about.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Let’s get together at the celebrated landmark of our city and the symbol of independence of our country: the Independence Monument. This is just a simple get together event organized through social media that has popped up in cities across the world. Let’s meet up with your friends and other social media users, talk stories or simply just take some pictures with the monument in the background. To show our unity and membership in the social media users community, let’s all wear WHITE COLOR (top and bottom if can; if no can, just white top. Just plain white, no print, no sign or anything).

Pass on the words and invite your friends to join the event too. If anybody knows any journalists, let them know too, so they could join us and help us get our voice heard.

Our message is:
“We believe that social media is an important tool in present day and
age, and such tool is accessible in Cambodia.”

Note: Considering the volume of traffic around independence monument on a Friday evening, it might be a challenge to gather at the actual monument. In that case, the park next to it would do too. There’s going to be plenty of people doing their exercise in the park. The thing is we do not want to create chaos or any problems in the park. Please don’t get yourself arrested. Considering the limited parking space around the area, please consider your means of transportation accordingly.

Disclaimer: This event is not a protest or a demonstration. Laws in Cambodia require permit for such event and it would need to be held at a specified location. I DO NOT HAVE SUCH PERMIT. This is not a political event, so please don’t hijack this event for political
purposes.

This message is to remind U.S. citizens in Cambodia to remain vigilant of their security during the upcoming Water Festival and to exercise caution if they decide to join in the festivities. Approximately one to two million Cambodians are expected to travel to Phnom Penh to take part in the festivities, dramatically increasing Phnom Penh’s population from November 20-22.

The following areas will be extremely congested with people: the Riverfront area, Hun Sen Park, Wat Phnom, Independence Monument, and the neighborhood where many expatriate residences are located. (See the map above or click here to download a bigger map.)

You should use the following common sense security tips at all times:
Assume that all criminals are armed. Do not run from or resist a robber. Carry only what you are willing to lose.
Pick-pocketing – please keep alert while shopping or moving about town. Avoid carrying large sums of money on your person and avoid keeping your money all in one place. Be careful of beggars who may be attempting to distract you or directly pick your pocket. Having a travel companion is encouraged.
Do not wear or display expensive jewelry while moving about town.
Crime is a 24-hour concern but darkness and late night travel increases your chances of being a victim of crime.
Drugs, prostitution, and organized crime elements are present in Cambodia and are security concerns at local bars and clubs. U.S. citizens are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and remove themselves from locations that present security concerns.
Counterfeit U.S. currency can be found in Cambodia. Be sure to scrutinize money prior to accepting it and report any possible counterfeit currency to the Regional Security Office of the U.S. Embassy.
Obey all police checkpoints, road closures, and commands.
If you become aware that a crime has been committed and/or that police are taking enforcement action, leave the area quickly. Criminals and police are quick to resort to deadly force.

Warden messages

“I come from a country where the numbers do not mean anything. Bill Gates owns 90 billions Euros; in equal with the GNP of Haiti for the next 30 years … There are countries where the poor sell their organs to the highest bidder, where they sell their children, or sometimes their votes, and then where they cashes in their conscience thanks to the stock market. Who said the economy was in the service of man? I come from a country that technically does not exist. It is like 2 / 3 of a planet sold for a few dollars.”
At Port-a-Piment, a small village in Haiti, Raoul Peck launches a reflection on the concept of profit in the era of globalization.
Cambodia, the Prince and the Prophecy
A documentary by James G. Gerrand, 75 min, 1988, English Version
To understand contemporary Cambodia, this film delves to the roots of its culture and its conflicts: it looks back to the impact of colonization by France and the struggle for independence in Indochina after the Second World War, the fears and the response to the thrust of their Vietnamese neighbors. It explores the years of Prince Norodom Sihanouk’s rule, his juggle for peace, his charisma and contradictions and follows the Prince’s overthrow, and traces Cambodia’s destruction during the five years of war before Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge came to power and launched their revolution.

Oradour, the Cry of Pain
A documentary by Michel Follin and Marc Wilmart, 68min, 1988, French version with English Subtitles
Projection animated by Tith Kanitha from Kon Khmer Koun Khmer!

Oradour, the Cry of Pain is not a historical reconstitution of the massacre perpetrated in Oradour-sur-Glane on 10th June 1944, but rather the story of the survivors and the families of the victims and through the memory of the stones, the story of the life and death of this Limousin village as well as the villagers’ need to live on and remember. This film reminds us of the barbarity of fighting men and the horror of the 642 victims so that, as the rust strips away what is left of Dr. Desourteaux’s car, and time doesn’t wear away our memories until the day we forget completely.
Michel Follin and Marc Wilmart’s film is still recognized today as being the main reference on the massacre in Oradour-sur-Glane, whether it is by the scientific community or the witnesses or protagonists of the terrible event.
