August 22nd is the next Nerd Night, featuring talks on science fiction, the history of comedy, and corporate logos, among other topics.

Nerd Night is (most of the time) a bi-weekly event, so to acknowledge the disappointed groans of the nerdier among you: yes, we were due for a Nerd Night on August 8th.

But August 8th is the 20th anniversary of collapse of the world’s tallest structure. On 8/8/1991, that great beacon of communication (or, some say, an electromagnetic Tower of Babel), the Warsaw Radio Mast, first bent and then snapped in half.

A radio tower can’t stand up by itself. It relies on countless tiny wires to keep it up. Sometimes these wires experience structural failure. Other times, they have crazy weeks at work or get called out of town unexpectedly and don’t have time to make a presentation. It’s no one’s fault. Crazy stuff has happened on August 8ths throughout history.

So let’s all take a moment this August 8th to reflect on the Warsaw Radio Mast. If you need some Phnom Penh-style enlightenment, may we suggest perusing some videos from TEDxPhnomPenh.

Between now and August 12th, we are accepting applications to speak at TEDxPhnomPenh. Do you have an idea worth spreading? Tell us about it. Do you know someone with an idea worth spreading? Tell us about them.

The next TEDxPhnomPenh will be held on October 15th. Work, play: what do you DO? This will be the theme of our event.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxPhnomPenh, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxPhnomPenh event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
