Heinrich-Boell-Foundation invites you to
HEY SISTER, WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!
Exhibition opening Friday, October 22, 5:30pm – 8pm
At Sovanna Shopping Mall
Street 271, Golden City
Next to Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital, Phnom Penh
Women artists are emerging as a vibrant part of the rapidly developing art scene in Cambodia. This exhibition brings 11 Cambodian female artists together for the very first time: BUTH Chan Anochea, CHHAN Dina, CHAN Pisey, HIEM An Kanitha, KONG Sovicha, LAM Soeung, NEAK Sophal, NUON Borina, OEUR Sokuntevy, THOU Samoun and TITH Kanitha.
All of these women were nominated as finalists in the INAUGURAL YOU KHIN MEMORIAL WOMEN’S ART PRIZE 2010. All are professional artists, working either as art teachers or designers in Phnom Penh. Included are those finding recent international success, like OUER Sokuntevy, and others whose young talent has been nurtured such as CHHAN Dina and TITH Kanitha.
This exhibition entitled Hey Sister, Where Are You Going?! shows the different approaches of female artists working now in the Kingdom of Cambodia. The women met with curator Lydia Parusol, and Heinrich Boell Foundation three times as a group to discuss issues around the theme. The exhibition organizers chose Sovanna Shopping Mall to be the exhibition venue in order to give the general Cambodian public the chance to experience contemporary art. The aim is to be as close as possible to the public following the moto “To bring art to the people, not the people to art”. This exhibition is something of an experiment as very few art projects have been staged in public spaces in Cambodia.
The exhibition is curated by Lydia Parusol, who has worked for four years as the Gallery Manager of META House German-Cambodian Cultural Centre. The exhibition runs from October 22 to November 3, 2010.
