Phnom Penh’s Street 57

What’s on the street 57 of Boeung Keng Kang area (BKK1) in Phnom Penh? This Phnom Penh street is setting the trend of the coffee culture in Cambodia. First of all, as you walk along this street you will pass by a number of coffee shops, many of them are good ones. Local chain Brown Coffee has established itself as one of the most favorite coffee shops in this area for some years. On the street 57 alone, there are surprisingly two Brown Coffee stores so close to each other. Just a stone away.

This 2016, street 57 welcomes a new member to the club. It’s none other than Starbucks.

As a longtime expatriate nicely put it in one tweet: “Looks like the coffee war is set to begin on Phnom Penh’s St. 57.

New Starbucks a block north of Brown Coffee.

Let’s see how this plays out.”

A Reuter journalist Prak Chanthul wrote in a tweet that “Cambodian teenagers are really into franchise coffee these days.Just About 2 years ago, they were super crazy with Taiwan’s bubble tea.” And in response, Cambodia observer asked that “How many coffee franchises can street 51 sustain? Amazon Coffee opening a few feet away from Costa & Coffee Bean.”

In addition to these big brand coffeehouses, there are others like: The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Costa Cafe, Cafe Benne, Dao Cafe, E&M Cafe, and The Piano.
