Using a SIM Card in Cambodia: A Guide for Travelers
If you’re planning a trip to Cambodia, one of the essential things you’ll need is a reliable means of communication. Purchasing a local SIM card is an excellent option for staying connected and accessing data services while in the country. This guide will walk you through the process of using a SIM card in Cambodia and provide valuable information to ensure a seamless experience.
Step 1: Check Phone Compatibility Before purchasing a SIM card in Cambodia, ensure that your phone is unlocked and compatible with the local network frequencies. Most modern smartphones are compatible with the networks in Cambodia, but it’s always wise to double-check with your mobile service provider.
Step 2: Choose a Mobile Network Cambodia has several mobile network operators, each offering various packages and services. The most popular networks are Cellcard, Smart Axiata, and Metfone. Research the coverage, data plans, and pricing offered by each operator to determine which one best suits your needs.
Step 3: Purchase a SIM Card You can buy a SIM card at official stores, authorized resellers, or even at the airport upon arrival. Look for the network provider’s logo or signage to ensure you’re purchasing an authentic SIM card. The SIM cards are usually affordable and come in various denominations, including micro and nano sizes to fit different phone models.
Step 4: Register Your SIM Card In compliance with Cambodian regulations, SIM cards need to be registered with the user’s identification. The seller will assist you in registering the SIM card, and you’ll be required to provide your passport or another form of identification. Make sure to carry your passport or a copy with you during the registration process.
Step 5: Activate and Top Up After registering the SIM card, it’s time to activate it. The seller will guide you through the activation process, which typically involves inserting the SIM card into your phone and making a test call or sending a text message. Once activated, you can top up your SIM card with credit or purchase data packages based on your requirements.
Step 6: Manage Your Usage Keep an eye on your data and call usage to avoid unexpected charges. Mobile network operators in Cambodia usually provide online platforms or mobile apps where you can monitor your usage, recharge credit, and subscribe to additional data or call packages. Familiarize yourself with these tools to stay in control of your usage and expenses.
Step 7: Enjoy Connectivity With your SIM card activated and topped up, you can now enjoy seamless connectivity throughout Cambodia. Make calls, send text messages, browse the internet, and use apps to enhance your travel experience.
Final Tips:
Ensure your phone is set to use the local network instead of automatic roaming to avoid unnecessary charges.
If you plan to travel to remote areas, check the coverage of your chosen network provider to ensure you have signal reception.
Take note of the SIM card’s phone number as you might need it for various services, such as registering for local apps or services.
By following these steps, you can easily acquire and use a SIM card in Cambodia, enabling you to stay connected and make the most of your time in the country. Enjoy your travels and the convenience of having a local phone number and data services at your fingertips!
To purchase a SIM card, you will need to provide your passport or other form of ID. The cost of a SIM card varies between operators, but it is typically around $2. Once you have purchased a SIM card, you will need to top it up with credit. You can do this at any convenience store or mobile phone shop.
Once you have topped up your credit, you can start using your SIM card to make calls, send text messages, and use the internet. The cost of calls, text messages, and data varies between operators, so it is a good idea to compare prices before you choose a plan.

Travelers can take a flight or bus to Siem Reap from Thailand’s Bangkok. The cheapest way to enter Cambodia from Thailand is by bus. I took a Virak Buntham mini van (departure point at Pratunam Market of Phaya Thai) from Bangkok to the border before getting on a night bus to Phnom Penh. The one way ticket price for Bangkok to Phnom Penh with a stop over at the border is $21. It took the mini van about four hours from Bangkok to the Thai-Cambodian border.
After crossing the border (to go through the passport check point), I continued to Phnom Penh through its night time bus, which about six hours. The van is clean, comfortable, and air conditioned. Half way through the four-hour drive, there is a change of driver.

How to get to Saigon from Phnom Penh by bus
Back in the early 2000s, traveling between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh city by bus was a pain. It took me all day long to get to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) from Phnom Penh back then when the roads were not well-paved. It’s a big difference now.
You can take a bus from the Vietnamese capital city to the Cambodian city faster than in the early 2000s. In addition to this, booking a bus ticket for Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh is really easy.
Traveling from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon) by bus is a popular and affordable option for many travelers. The journey takes around 6-7 hours, depending on the road conditions and the type of bus you choose.
Here are the steps to get from Phnom Penh to Saigon by bus:
1. Book your ticket in advance: There are several bus companies that offer this route, so it’s a good idea to book your ticket in advance to secure your seat and avoid disappointment. You can book your ticket online, at a travel agency, or directly at the bus station.
2. Choose your type of bus: There are several types of buses available, ranging from standard to VIP. Choose the type that suits your budget and comfort level.
3. Arrive at the Phnom Penh bus station: The bus station is located in the center of the city, so it’s easily accessible by tuk-tuk, taxi, or motorbike. Make sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure time to ensure a smooth check-in process.

Trains in Cambodia are a scenic and comfortable way to travel, but it’s important to know that the railway network is still under development. Currently, there are only two operational lines.
Cambodia has a limited railway system primarily used for transporting goods. The state-owned company Royal Railways of Cambodia (RRC) operates the railway system. However, the infrastructure is in poor condition, making it unreliable and inefficient for both passengers and cargo. Despite these challenges, the government has announced plans to improve and expand the railway system in the future to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth.
One of the most active railway routes in Cambodia is the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville route, which connects the capital city to the main port. This route is mainly used for freight transportation and takes approximately 6 hours.
Another route is the Phnom Penh-Poipet route, which connects Phnom Penh to the border town of Poipet. It serves as an alternative route to the busy National Road 5 and is also primarily used for freight transportation.
The Battambang-Poipet route connects the city of Battambang to the border town of Poipet and is predominantly used for freight transportation.
As I prepare to travel to Battambang tomorrow, I have decided to take a different route this time and try the train instead of booking a bus or van ticket on BookMeBus. It’s noteworthy that the train service in Cambodia exists, and there is a Cambodia Railway Station.
To book train tickets, you don’t need to physically visit the Cambodia Railway Station. The Royal Railways website provides an online platform (available in English and Khmer) where you can check train routes, schedules, and prices. A one-way ticket from Phnom Penh to Battambang province costs around $10, and there are currently two schedules per day. I opted for the early morning departure. While the price is slightly higher compared to a bus ticket, the journey duration is a bit longer.
For secure payment, it is recommended to use PayPal. Payment methods from ABA or Acleda banks are not available, but you can use Wing Bank, which is owned by the same company group that operates the Cambodian train service.

In recent years, Cambodia has made significant renovations and upgrades to its railway system. The reopening of the Phnom Penh Royal Railway Station in 2010 marked a turning point. Traveling across Cambodia by train has become more accessible and convenient. This page provides useful information about train schedules, stations, and routes.
From Phnom Penh, you can take a train to Sihanoukville, Takeo, Kampot, and soon to Poipet. The cost of a one-way ticket for an air-conditioned train trip is under $10.
To book a train ticket, you can call (+855) 78 888 582 or (+855) 78 888 583, or book online through the Royal Railways website.
